Lord What Good Can Come From Me Having A Broken Ankle?

3 January 2010 15 Comments

When I went on a family walk on Monday 28th December I had no idea that I was in for a BIG life changing event.

I slipped on a remote country path and heard a snapping sound as I went down. I groaned inwardly and outwardly as I landed on the icy muddy path.

Stepping Stones

My daughter in law sat on the mud behind me to enable me to rest supported rather than lie fully on the ground. People took their coats and covered me to keep me warm. Kind walkers stopped to offer help and share their flask of tea and water bottle. Someone even offered to pray.

2 of our party walked to a tiny village 15 minutes away because there was no signal and we couldn’t phone for an ambulance.

I lay on the path for 90 minutes until the ambulance men finally arrived. I couldn’t be air rescued because there was nowhere to land the helicopter and it was beginning to get dark.

Inside Dove Holes

It took the ambulance men and 4 family members 25 minutes to carry me to the ambulance on a stretcher. By the time we reached the ambulance it was dark.

3 hours after falling I arrived at the hospital to discover that both bones in my right ankle where broken and some of the bone had broken off.

I spent 3 days waiting for the swelling to go down enough for them to safely operate and finally emerged from hospital late on Saturday evening.

I can’t walk, can barely make it from one room to the next and can’t negotiate stairs so won’t get a shower for weeks. I have a walking frame and a wheelchair and a commode. Life as I knew it has ended for a while.

I will be able to put weight on my ankle in around 6 weeks and can expect to be well recovered weeks later.

I asked the Lord what He wanted to come out of me being laid aside and this is what He told me.

This injury forces you to slow down and take time out. Now you have to take much needed rest and can connect with me in an all encompassing way.

Look on it as an opportunity to grow in me and to grow your relationships with other people. Allow yourself space to be and to recover.

I am Jehovah Jireh and I will provide all you need. Let me take care of things, rest in me and know that my everlasting arms are about you. You don’t need to fret about anything, I have it all in hand. I know what you need before you do and I have set everything in place, EVERYTHING.

You need to know that everything doesn’t need to depend on you, stop trying to do my job for me. Things will work out even better when you let me do things in my way. You simply need to believe that everything is safely taken care of in the Father’s hands – everything!

I want you to take time to think about what you would like to do and then plan to make it happen. It is okay to spend time doing things that you want to do. Who do you think planted those desires within you? Run with your desires and delight your heart. What springs to mind? Jot it down and plan when you will do it.

God is good, He is good all the time. Everything works together for good to those who love God. I hope you are encouraged, I am.

    So you’ll be renaming your blog “A closer hobble with God” perhaps.

    Lynne, as I’ve said elsewhere, I can sense this is opening the doors to a new and great opportunity for you that you would have been too busy for if you’d carried on as before.

    Any support I can offer, please just shout.

    Wow, Lynne!

    Firstly, I am sorry to hear about your accident. I wish you a speedy recovery and will remember to be praying for you!

    However, I am happy to read of your insight on all of this. What a beautiful reframe! Yes, sometimes God does allow (but not necessarily cause)mishaps in our lives. I can think of times when I have been set back and querying God, only to receive His peace and reassurance, and find that it was a time to retreat, reflect and grow. I have also learned, as you said, that God is good ALL THE TIME, even though our finite minds may not always comprehend it, and to give thanks in everything. While I might be moaning about my situation, there are always so many people who are worse off. Our mishaps pale in comparison to what some others go through. Imagine if there had been no one there to help. Or if it had been raining/snowing. So many other worse things could have happened. But because our God is faithful, He only allows what we can handle. And He’s always there with us in our trials. He is truly THE GOOD GOD!

    I wish you all the best Lynne, and a speedy recovery. No doubt you will come out of this a better person, with more value to add to your world.

    Love and warmth,

    Oma

    Bless you Lynne, what a beautiful refelction of events.
    I enjoyed the gentle, loving question and answer exchange, especially the bit about “stop trying to do my job for me” as so often, we think it’s all got to be done by us personally!
    Wishing you a restful and delightful recovery :)

    Marion and Oma thank you for leaving comments.

    I guess there are times when I wish that God didn’t trust me to handle quite so much :) My life is rarely easy or comfortable, but it is rich and I’m always amazed to see how God leads me through ‘impossible’ circumstances.

    Thank you for sharing your painful experience and enlightenment, and I too loved your question and answer. As it often can, it resonates with some of us I am sure – me for one. It is certainly my intention to let go of things and welcome in fun this year. Have fun playing

    This is the first blog of yours that I have read, and I have to tell you it was extremely inspiring to me. I, too, have been going through some physical trials for quite a while and have prayed for relief but did not see the answers (at least not the way I wanted to!). I was starting to doubt everything, even my own faith! But your post truly inspires me that God indeed still loves me and is with me, and is in control as He is working things out according to His (not my) plan! :)

    Thank you for your website. It is such a blessing. I love the 5 Minute Life Coach articles so much!

    Many blessings,
    Paulette

    I can remember some 4 1/2 years ago when my Husband was helping a friend of ours clean out her gutters. He was hurrying which for him was never a good idea. I am the hare and he is the turtle. Both work well together I might add, LOL. Anyway he was our only source of income at the time. I was networking for his new and growing company as he did the home inspections. 911 happened, we sold our home for greener pastures and moved close to his family.

    Fighting all the way and leaving a $150,000 income I followed my Husband and his decisions. Just 30 days previous to this day his brother had stolen $26,000 of the house sale money and we were living with another couple that were going to leave the country in a few months and we would rent their home. Oops, he fell off the ladder shattering his right wrist. See, told you moving fast is not good. :) The couple we lived with were told they would be leaving the country now instead of 6 months and my husband is now in the hospital for 5 days and a 4 1/2 hour surgery to put a plate and 9 screws in it to keep it together.

    Homeless we were now and no where to go. No children, that was good but bad when you are asking for food stamps and help from the state. A few days in the car and friends from another state came and got us after hearing through the grapevine we were stranded. The move was across the country back to the Midwest from the warm West where we had a party to burn all the snow equipment when we left the Midwest which we thought was the last time. Another chuckle. It was not the happy end of the story this move with “the friends” who ended up not being the people we remembered from long ago and we did make our way out of their house, well really we ran to be exact, but started our journey of financial recovery as well as licking our wounds in more ways than one.

    I chuckled when I read your story thinking of the many thoughts you have had since you fell and I think of the journey that you will take with the love of my life and what sounds like yours Jesus Christ. As I walked in the what I thought was a never ending journey I learned to walk WITH my Lord and not turn around to see the miracles but actually felt them as they happened one at a time. I learned to enjoyed the most simplest things that He gave me as we traveled together. I smile at the wonderful things that you will learn and I am thrilled thinking of the rich relationship you have yet to discover.

    My yoke is easy He said. It is only when you walk side by side with Him through these kinds of life journeys that you understand why it is easy because of that yoke. He certainly told you the truth by telling you the why, some don’t stop long enough to listen. You are 1,000 miles ahead of them already. SO…now rest in Him, THIS is a wonderful journey you are on, just wonderful. My prayers are for your mending and your growth.

    Our God is a faithful God who is always there for us. He never said that we wouldn’t have trials, He said He would walk with us in them, He is indeed our ever present help.

    I have so appreciated precious friends during this time. I have a faithful group of friends who are transporting Barney to school and regularly cooking for us.

    Hi, I have taken a lesson from what happened to and can agree with the hymnist John Newton that
    Though dark be my way, since He is my Guide,
    “tis mine to obey, “tis His to perform;
    Though cisterns be broken and creatures all fail,
    The words He hath spoken shall surely prevail.
    His love in time time past forbids me to think,
    He’ll leave me at last in trouble to sink;
    While each Ebenezer I have in review confirms His good pleasure to help me quiet through.
    Since all that You meet shall work for your good, the bitter is sweet, the medicine food;
    Though painful at present, ’twill cease before long,
    You will have conqueror’s song .

    God bless you
